In that time I've had two trips overseas that I have posted on <a href="http://andrews-travel.blogspot.com.au/" target="_blank">my travel blog</a>.<br />
I thought it was a good idea to keep my personal and travel blogs separate but now I'm not so sure. What do you think?<br />
Between Facebook and Instagram and blogs and Flickr etc have so many options for keeping in contact with friends it is hard to know which platform to use.<br />
After we returned from Malaysia last year I worked like a crazy thing to create my photo album. I took so many photos that I ended up with not one but two very thick photo books - 350 pages in total!! I printed these with Albumworks, an Australian company.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQdaW-V3eLTCVOibHKE3WJdGVUoh-KlaP7THBwnHi5uhvYmVh5CQgc0LhU88xz_OfBmcDjdZjd1urVJtVAjEhm7iJcQkQ-X5geKXbbEUDqSsylsLcSagfywyppbQNNcsllcIZZYejfYu4/s1600/untitled-8559.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQdaW-V3eLTCVOibHKE3WJdGVUoh-KlaP7THBwnHi5uhvYmVh5CQgc0LhU88xz_OfBmcDjdZjd1urVJtVAjEhm7iJcQkQ-X5geKXbbEUDqSsylsLcSagfywyppbQNNcsllcIZZYejfYu4/s1600/untitled-8559.jpg" /></a></div>
I went with the full page photo / photo grid spread that I've used the past few trips. It works so well for me. There is NO WAY I could have created 350 individual page designs!!<br />
I've posted some of the pages in <a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/ideas/showgallery.php?cat=2774" target="_blank">my DesignerDigitals gallery</a><br />
And here is a preview of some of the two page spreads:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_Dspdw_ykzDAutIT_S1m6UlRdVJamYrN6pJv2Yjtg8cOLG9sq8fltOrwrws5ESMKvE_08KIzuBMAghMjzLyO44er0Lc4bkCVMuWa9xu70rPVHB85PwtxUybVnIo3fq_CJlbLaPSYr830/s1600/Capture2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="342" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_Dspdw_ykzDAutIT_S1m6UlRdVJamYrN6pJv2Yjtg8cOLG9sq8fltOrwrws5ESMKvE_08KIzuBMAghMjzLyO44er0Lc4bkCVMuWa9xu70rPVHB85PwtxUybVnIo3fq_CJlbLaPSYr830/s640/Capture2.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_hE3plLRnmQsE95VbYqSL094dwh-ebYMiGIxMeeLzahKc1H20eVa9Emgu6nESlXAqPqVMYvsKYT-eo1eB4M05zQsw7eAuHFwXSRjMkh0B7msbTCt1JQui75di9Vvvh6ufk-m719L1tgk/s1600/Capture.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="340" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_hE3plLRnmQsE95VbYqSL094dwh-ebYMiGIxMeeLzahKc1H20eVa9Emgu6nESlXAqPqVMYvsKYT-eo1eB4M05zQsw7eAuHFwXSRjMkh0B7msbTCt1JQui75di9Vvvh6ufk-m719L1tgk/s640/Capture.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
I used Cathy Zielske's Six by Eights Layered Template Set No. 01 and No. 2<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/18866" target="_blank"><img alt="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/18866" border="0" src="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/images/LT318391-200x200.jpg" /></a>
<a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/18865" target="_blank"><img alt="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/18865" border="0" src="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/images/LT252315-200x200.jpg" /></a> </div>
I rotated them 90 degrees for my landscape book. These templates worked so well for my mix of landscape and portrait photos, it made it so easy to complete my pages quickly.<br />
<br />
So now for my most recent trip... I returned from Sri Lanka last week. I did not take nearly as many photos on this trip because my camera failed. That is a whole other story. So since many of my pics were taken on my point-and-shoot camera I thought I'd use this template set. It's a set I've been wanting to use ever since Katie Pertiet first released it in 2009!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/7531" target="_blank"><img alt="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/7531" border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqx5fVdsr3rS_mmGASLqKc0BNd33EUBHM_xbWY5w80AIutMwHL-5smSroUUzWCWtz0ERF5jk8qXXEftqt4dt-jEwhfkW0hW1SjnX9GOcmbhNP-K52mrac-aA5BY8aS_i5lRkGJUN3KY-Y/s320/KPertiet_SimpleSummaryLTs09PREV.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
And this template set just happens to be on sale right now!<br />
<br />
So I'll let you know how it goes. Promise :)Esther Andrewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17730422311728237992noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5197999983131703997.post-48027215023943159882014-09-08T15:33:00.002-07:002014-09-08T16:06:16.116-07:00Scrappy blog tourI was tagged by <a href="http://lynngrieveson.typepad.com/notes_from_the_side_of_a_/2014/09/scrappy-blog-tour.html" target="_blank">Lynn Grieveson</a> to join in this blog tour!<br />
I have been a bad blogger, so it is good to have a prod to post again!<br />
<br />
Here are the blog tour questions<br />
<h3>
1. What am I working on right now?</h3>
Last November I was very lucky to travel to the USA and meet many of the amazing women who are part of the <a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/ideas/showgallery.php?cat=585" target="_blank">Designer Digitals Creative Team</a>. I took an extended vacation, first with <a href="http://finding-carol.blogspot.com.au/2014/09/scrapbookers-blog-tour.html" target="_blank">Carol</a> and some of the other ladies from the team and then with the family. I took 7000 photos! So my project right now is to sort them out put them into a book or two or three! It will take too long to scrap them so I've decided to use <a href="http://digital-photography-school.com/lightroom-what-is-it-and-when-should-you-consider-it/" target="_blank">Lightroom</a>'s Book Module to create the pages.<br />
<br />
Here are a few:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5581/14940690302_d797ff02b9_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="229" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5581/14940690302_d797ff02b9_b.jpg" width="640" /></a><a href="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3900/14744086399_9005a9f297_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="228" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3900/14744086399_9005a9f297_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5571/14918059016_ec50eff6ba_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="228" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5571/14918059016_ec50eff6ba_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I've added Designer Digital products to the page background and into photo spots.<br />
<br />
I've also just finished reorganizing my computer space with a little help from Ikea. I picked up some photomats yesterday and popped some of my photos into the Billy bookcase doors above my desk. Here it is with the chair I recovered, a new Ikea desk-top and recycled cupboards transformed with new handles from Ikea. Love this space - cheap, cheerful and functional!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjccSSpto4U64EH5dUkOmOIPGsMGR_78_GPBYETZocaUaVIAWcDzkl48Y1Nz9SKM5BpeVg4zV3fg9zEWo3P5JRy8waCWdq84mAL26XJQAtchlaHq4KgBSmzRTYrHSv8tIiFCFN6ekGLUEM/s1600/New+shelves+are+up-19060788.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjccSSpto4U64EH5dUkOmOIPGsMGR_78_GPBYETZocaUaVIAWcDzkl48Y1Nz9SKM5BpeVg4zV3fg9zEWo3P5JRy8waCWdq84mAL26XJQAtchlaHq4KgBSmzRTYrHSv8tIiFCFN6ekGLUEM/s1600/New+shelves+are+up-19060788.jpg" height="640" width="425" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<h3>
2) How long does it take to create a project?</h3>
Hmm... define a "project"! I can spend a couple of hours on a single page! I generally try to finish a page in an hour. These Lightroom pages take maybe 10 minutes, but it might take me another hour to sort through my photos and edit them first!<br />
<br />
<h3>
3) What are my favourite things to create with at the moment</h3>
Have I mentioned <a href="http://digital-photography-school.com/lightroom-what-is-it-and-when-should-you-consider-it/" target="_blank">Lightroom </a>yet?! I love the magic of editing a photo to discover things hidden in the shadows or add that crispness and pop with the sliders. I used to find it so hard to cull photos. It was hard to check which ones were the best and even harder to press the delete key on the rest. Lightroom lets me view photos side-by-side and zoom in to pick the best ones, and simply flag the others for deletion later. That suits a perfectionist-procrastinator like me down to the ground! ;)<br />
<br />
<br />
For my current project, I'm loving using the <a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=pencil+lines&x=0&y=0" target="_blank">pencillines </a>goodies from Designer Digitals to add a bit of informality to my pages.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/18431" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/images/DS110229-200x200.jpg" /></a>
<a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/18528" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/images/AL894355-200x200.jpg" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/14186" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/images/EL393336-200x200.jpg" /></a>
<a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/14717" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/images/EL508063-200x200.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<h3>
4) How do I become inspired and stay inspired?</h3>
The web is a wonderful place! There is so much inspiration there. I love to browse the galleries and occasionally get lost in Pinterest. You can see how I used my <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/esther_andrews/shelving/" target="_blank">Pinterest shelving board</a> helped me design my working space! I spend a lot of time in planning!<br />
Of course when I'm busy or under the weather, mojo disappears, and usually it's time to take it easy and wait for inspiration to appear out of the blue.<br />
Joining the local camera club has helped me stay inspired with my photography. Each month there are activities, excursions and competitions which I participate in whenever I have the time.<br />
<br />
<h3>
5) What is my signature style?</h3>
It is always hard to pick your signature style. I think it's easier for others to do that. I know I tend not to use a lot of layers on my pages, I prefer to focus on my story and the photos. I do create a lot of travel books and prefer double page spreads. I find having a full page photo on one side makes it so much easier. It provides instant contrast with the white space and photo-block on the facing page and is super quick to do! I like white backgrounds and subtle use of other elements such as paint
spatters or the pencil lines I'm currently using. I love to use lifted
white photo frames and brads or flair to add dimension. <br />
<br />
OK... the whole idea of a blog tour is that you hand link up a few other bloggers who have participated. Many of my creative blogging friends have already posted their blog tour entry.<br />
I have nominated <a href="http://cookingmylife.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Maureen Reynolds</a> to carry the baton :)<br />
And if you'd like to visit a few posts by my other friends: <a href="http://finding-carol.blogspot.com.au/2014/09/scrapbookers-blog-tour.html" target="_blank">Carol</a>, <a href="http://britgirl.typepad.co.uk/sweet_nothings/2014/09/creative-blog-tour.html" target="_blank">britgirl (Mel)</a> .<br />

It is SO easy! I thought I'd share a slideshow of our trip to Mexico from last November.<br />
Enjoy :)<br />

<h3 class="entry-title">
<a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/blog/template-mashup-challenge-scrapping-moments/" target="_blank">Template Mashup Challenge: Scrapping Moments</a></h3>
<br />
For the challenge I chose two templates that I rather love:<br />
<br />
<b><a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/14005http://">Tender Moments Layered Template</a></b><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/LT651407.jpg"><img alt="LT651407" class="size-full wp-image-6268 aligncenter" src="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/LT651407.jpg" height="500" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
and <b><a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/14540">Scrap Express No. 134</a></b>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/LT510566.jpg"><img alt="Scrap Express No. 134" class="size-full wp-image-6267 aligncenter" src="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/LT510566.jpg" height="500" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<br />
The Designer Digitals gallery is already buzzing with pages using the two templates.<br />
<br />
This is my page for the challenge - my daughter’s 17th birthday (which was over a year
ago!):<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/2013-01-22-Zoes-17th-Birthday_blog.jpg"><img alt="Esther's page" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6270" src="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/2013-01-22-Zoes-17th-Birthday_blog.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a> <br />
<br />
Now ALL templates are on sale at Designer Digitals. <br />

It's been so long I couldn't even remember how to start a blog post!! Never mind, I'm here now :)<br />
I posted a page at Designer Digitals yesterday (click the photo to view in the gallery there).<br />
It's a page for a scraplift challenge - with wonderful inspiration:<br />
<div class="entry-title">
<a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/blog/saturday-scraplift-scrapbooking-challenge-layers-fun/" target="_blank">Saturday Scraplift Scrapbooking Challenge – Layers of Fun</a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/ideas/showphoto.php?photo=205057&title=usa-trip-album-cover&cat=500" target="_blank"><br /></a></div>
My friend, Maureen, said she "totally didn't understand" how I did it -
which I don't believe for a second, but I thought I'd post my process
in case anyone is interested.<br />
<br />
<h4>
Step 1 Open a new canvas</h4>
Create a new 3600 x 3600 page (actually, mine is not square, but it
doesn’t matter).<br />
<br />
<h4>
Step 2 Add your map image</h4>
Open a map of the country you visited. I used Map overlays no1
by Katie Pertiet.<br />
Paste it onto your new page.<br />
BTW, this could be ANY image from which you want to select a shape to use as a mask.<br />
<br />
<h4>
Step 3 Select the countries from your map</h4>
Use the Quick Selection Tool to select the countries you are after.<br />
Note: If your map was an overlay (like mine) you will need to turn on sample all layers so you can grab the white background for the countries.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVqV0WE3ls52pKU5rly3rbiKVvz6Psb9jGzG7NsAOOjT9jiwCFgZ4_Epi-2xyI5E2o5eCQAnAarKTVmW_iuFisPdi1CTqNv9fHAwLJiRCycWByFxl6VH5_C0pxQgqFYJeiTsDKTi6bHZ0/s1600/step-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVqV0WE3ls52pKU5rly3rbiKVvz6Psb9jGzG7NsAOOjT9jiwCFgZ4_Epi-2xyI5E2o5eCQAnAarKTVmW_iuFisPdi1CTqNv9fHAwLJiRCycWByFxl6VH5_C0pxQgqFYJeiTsDKTi6bHZ0/s1600/step-2.jpg" height="527" width="640" /></a></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKgPlIQdLdwel4a2ub8keCnWE8W-qsTFppPCWSnJZlEmmBP5XwryaqiD85Rj74W93TfcsnQXbpTK9R9gj7u6jTfYHLls0I5bH4Fvd3_uGu4kuGiIxG5MeLaAG4jjVEDUVhbe3hLue2-Pk/s1600/step+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><br />
It does get a bit fiddly. You will need to switch between the Add to selection and Subtract from selection buttons to refine your selection – remove country names, etc.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4VYS8Zyce853-H7u594llX_aOIf-dLi4FQrjo611UAeBOXlJHniTLGxAYea95eyfR-fowKilekEhGeZFLYaTsxih8zZH3kaY1iDYyoSfZ-n8RrZ6Owb21tr1E_JjJwVLsiM73onZ3fL8/s1600/step-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4VYS8Zyce853-H7u594llX_aOIf-dLi4FQrjo611UAeBOXlJHniTLGxAYea95eyfR-fowKilekEhGeZFLYaTsxih8zZH3kaY1iDYyoSfZ-n8RrZ6Owb21tr1E_JjJwVLsiM73onZ3fL8/s1600/step-4.jpg" height="586" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<h4>
Step 4 Create an Extracted Mask Layer of your country</h4>
There are a couple of options you can use now. But one way is copy your selection using Edit -> Copy Merged (Shit + Ctrl + C) and paste as a new layer.<br />
Now press Ctrl + D to clear your selection.<br />
Hide your map overlay layer.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7HdaYVqNopdu29W44LSgf9y3cn8f0Qs2-O3rnipPXydhMQnqpZFEu1akONuUwisyLYvJ5XYjUrMuE0IQpFIyybTKXne4cUiBeSogLIG8By3O_FlbXNCAhrMJ3zRMaxJz9Sm2w9eCQCRk/s1600/step-5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7HdaYVqNopdu29W44LSgf9y3cn8f0Qs2-O3rnipPXydhMQnqpZFEu1akONuUwisyLYvJ5XYjUrMuE0IQpFIyybTKXne4cUiBeSogLIG8By3O_FlbXNCAhrMJ3zRMaxJz9Sm2w9eCQCRk/s1600/step-5.jpg" height="400" width="640" /></a></div>
<h4>
Step 5 Clip a background image to your Extracted Mask Layer</h4>
You can choose any background you like. It just serves to fill in any gaps that the photos don't cover. I placed a Roughed Up Photo Mats Map over my mask layer.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6_WUPudRelv3F9Qdr6czmzr9aBj226Pxle02Qst75b5aV-6le83jmETX7a444AVxD82aEO2VdnTo0MhnHeVq41GtsjqzJUbZmTEgh0DlEv1bhHjozHRjvE40cx9_L8s1sdtw0x650xS4/s1600/step-6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6_WUPudRelv3F9Qdr6czmzr9aBj226Pxle02Qst75b5aV-6le83jmETX7a444AVxD82aEO2VdnTo0MhnHeVq41GtsjqzJUbZmTEgh0DlEv1bhHjozHRjvE40cx9_L8s1sdtw0x650xS4/s1600/step-6.jpg" height="452" width="640" /></a></div>
Then drag into place and press Ctrl + Alt + G to clip it to the Extracted Map mask layer.
Suddenly it’s starting to look like something!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjSm7hmbs5xThcB2k_HyNe2wizsYYHYtJe_9dTU3yD-8gkqyNJMV3WuF7gN7UCYWIES-pkc2oY9ba24mqnTad5hxftBh9jI-BKLimuKzys-rzZPaGMCFTqn44STN5BIEPtVL0ngucniVs/s1600/step+7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjSm7hmbs5xThcB2k_HyNe2wizsYYHYtJe_9dTU3yD-8gkqyNJMV3WuF7gN7UCYWIES-pkc2oY9ba24mqnTad5hxftBh9jI-BKLimuKzys-rzZPaGMCFTqn44STN5BIEPtVL0ngucniVs/s1600/step+7.JPG" height="375" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<h4>
Step 6</h4>
I added a shadow to my Extracted Map mask and dragged the two layers to make the map larger on my page.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_dmcif0Mm14abpO8L59ptq3W0l0OXL_eZR1sNfA3WMuHSIiJLZ7J_d7PIOQP5a1Oiur8E6saC4RyDLd493Kk3nEU67BsoQNRKZ-dJFrR59bN4uZMgM1XDvYBywPTCVhYbriV9TbvOE04/s1600/step-8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_dmcif0Mm14abpO8L59ptq3W0l0OXL_eZR1sNfA3WMuHSIiJLZ7J_d7PIOQP5a1Oiur8E6saC4RyDLd493Kk3nEU67BsoQNRKZ-dJFrR59bN4uZMgM1XDvYBywPTCVhYbriV9TbvOE04/s1600/step-8.jpg" height="476" width="640" /></a></div>
<h4>
Step 7 Add background photos</h4>
Then, starting at the top I added my background photos, clipping them to the Extracted Map mask in the same way I clipped the map in the step above.. I erased some of the edges of the photos to blend them into the map. (I actually used a layer mask to hide the edges rather than using the actual eraser.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0A8RBFMU0HvmNWeiTMmmswxfhh2moj3_omjkADJn4c-VwAS_d1OABD-gmNnuhceNcBgn-8udRuWNoXlUtseqNUaAdCn38XFI2M9RadYMWp_4ssEHZy971vhItxrKSpxXnYuO3j3-FIw8/s1600/step-9-v2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0A8RBFMU0HvmNWeiTMmmswxfhh2moj3_omjkADJn4c-VwAS_d1OABD-gmNnuhceNcBgn-8udRuWNoXlUtseqNUaAdCn38XFI2M9RadYMWp_4ssEHZy971vhItxrKSpxXnYuO3j3-FIw8/s1600/step-9-v2.jpg" height="440" width="640" /></a></div>
<h4>
Step 9 Adding foreground photos</h4>
On top of those background images I placed a few extracted images. I did the extraction using the same way as I extracted the map mask. Mostly I just deleted the sky which is an easy one to select with the Quick Selection Tool and then press delete. Then I moved each one onto my page and placed it in position.
Here they are all removed from the mask so you can see what I used. I have added a little shadow to each one already.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK58MYI6qCjFAOUi73LLLHeq45WrBd0k2JxXiUV1fg28ZLv3qrDOGwYfTXjb-yQ2krgvF3v65kVT3COPjAsYTDMAJVEv0cmIIQ2V2RBSA-tdvCP4dUOXM4whItEQls87ut1nA0Q6VdZzI/s1600/step+10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK58MYI6qCjFAOUi73LLLHeq45WrBd0k2JxXiUV1fg28ZLv3qrDOGwYfTXjb-yQ2krgvF3v65kVT3COPjAsYTDMAJVEv0cmIIQ2V2RBSA-tdvCP4dUOXM4whItEQls87ut1nA0Q6VdZzI/s1600/step+10.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<h4>
Step 10 Finishing Touches</h4>
Then I added the frame and text. (Actually I did them first because it gave me a sense of the overall design early on, but I forgot to show you that here!). And here it is again, the finished album cover!<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiD7HKwewKJ9Ytnq_ZrfXOAIZb6oxXwx-hkyHA8G2fTAQlLRDG7RBIi2SINOtROjXtKnqHLHnKh1URFynlZbFN9oTQq098oxzkgZ8yg9FIpha612lPSqE4DufyW3Midm81UqXiAdXBbATo/s1600/USA+cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiD7HKwewKJ9Ytnq_ZrfXOAIZb6oxXwx-hkyHA8G2fTAQlLRDG7RBIi2SINOtROjXtKnqHLHnKh1URFynlZbFN9oTQq098oxzkgZ8yg9FIpha612lPSqE4DufyW3Midm81UqXiAdXBbATo/s1600/USA+cover.jpg" height="520" width="640" /> </a><br />
And maybe it does look complicated, but honestly I took longer selecting the photos than I did creating the page! <br />

I am a member of the local camera club. It is such great fun to share your passion with like-minded people and a great excuse to behave totally weird in public :)<br />
I posted these photos directly from Lightroom using a plug-in (<a href="http://www.photographers-toolbox.com/products/lrblog.php" target="_blank">LR/Blog</a>). It took me heaps of experimentation to figure out how to set it up so that when you click on a photo it opens a larger version!<br />

I've had terrific fun with its "super macro" function. It is indeed "super"! I thought I'd experiment with sharing some of the photos directly onto my blog from Lightroom. It is not as simple as I'd hoped. I have downloaded the <a href="http://www.photographers-toolbox.com/products/lrblog.php" target="_blank">LR/Blog</a> plugin but it is not working with my copy of Lightroom2! I can't find an alternative and I have spend DAYS trying to work this out!! My sweet husband told me
last night that he would have "cracked the shits" ages ago and given up.
Yes, he would have!!<br />
But I CAN export straight from LR2 to Flickr using Jeffrey Friedl's <a href="http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/flickr" target="_blank">Export to Flickr</a> plugin, so here's plan B:<br />
<br />
<h3>
Experimenting with exports from Flickr</h3>
Below are some other methods I've tried with varying success. I want to be able to display the photo title and description with each photo. Do you have any suggestions?!<br />
<br />
<hr />
<h3>
Straight from Flickr </h3>

I don't know what I'm doing wrong here but I can't get them any bigger than 75 pixels. I specified 500 pixels! Is this a bug with Flickr?<br />

But I hope you had a good one, anyway.<br />
As my girls have grown and started leaving home Mother's Day has become so much more special. I just love seeing them all together and having fun. We had a lovely lunch at a local restaurant. Not only was the food fabulous, but they had a wall that provided the perfect backdrop and a big window for light! How thoughtful of them!<br />
So here is my family and an extra one (extra-TALL one) who is quickly becoming a special member of the family.<br />

I even bought LRv4 just so I could create photobooks. (You can <a href="http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2013/04/lightroom-5-beta-now-available.html" target="_blank">download Lightroom 5 Beta for free</a>).<br />
<br />
My first book arrived this week:<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkFguaCXPAfrY9IjXTDx6kgMVUjByRuBuBKZ5svGahZdgkKz-I1xXhdV7b_hzVHT_iqnifYR4ztamMQec2PhtJArJdxh0_LnEgNzOhj0z87E40dnIUPQGhGT5CEj8WoGNkwMwz0hajuRc/s1600/new_photo_books-0195.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkFguaCXPAfrY9IjXTDx6kgMVUjByRuBuBKZ5svGahZdgkKz-I1xXhdV7b_hzVHT_iqnifYR4ztamMQec2PhtJArJdxh0_LnEgNzOhj0z87E40dnIUPQGhGT5CEj8WoGNkwMwz0hajuRc/s640/new_photo_books-0195.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3_QrVCvjtPyfCDpJ_NQUTPHDPliqeRTf_v0j1OaOlg0_oPHil_XgVy0dbwfLIfOnCyjv8UsEYa1g1e3Uzf9Jqyj-j-_jbRehQP5iV7es_OTdq0MaxqmvASRDOa7ZchhrUODvgGQLXGpo/s1600/new_photo_books-0197.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><br /></div>
The cover was obviously not created in Lightroom. <a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/ideas/showphoto.php?photo=191706&title=jake-26amp-3b-bec&cat=500" target="_blank">Credits here.</a><br />
<br />
Lightroom only creates Blurb books so the photobooks can only be in
Blurb sizes. You might notice that this book is in A4 landscape size- my preferred size. This is NOT a Blurb book. The
closest Blurb has is 10"x8" or 12"x12". <br />
<br />
So I thought I'd share how I made a non-Blurb book from Lightroom.<br />
I pretended I was making a 12"x12" Blurb book and chose a bunch of templates that allowed a big margin at the top and the bottom. In Lightroom my pages looked like this:<br />
<br />
<img border="0" height="378" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigBrnQAtxWzw9ucCSLXne8rxa7DPvK0Z5bkJWbQZem9IFYUH2k7FjbppZ-H6NL3p0oTlE3Pk90VBXBgz6ngNGxWbzHKlXppY_35bES8eWv9kuXHWWpMx1pZgA4HeT98HgqOq4iV3UQb9I/s640/p1-17.jpg" width="640" /><br />
<br />
Just to be sure, I made an image to use in the background that showed how much margin I needed.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVlkMwgfBm-KSALbkAAR7diatl55sHZLzMfLiMO4OAMnCHfUcJe-oo2g2qUCes7C61_dM-tNdmLSXaLn-eRXxZaWx4_-R-C3KA5IB7W3GYDUz4kkwe0Gx9cnpbvSPxBHdIQnrh9cYvCPY/s1600/A4-page-size.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVlkMwgfBm-KSALbkAAR7diatl55sHZLzMfLiMO4OAMnCHfUcJe-oo2g2qUCes7C61_dM-tNdmLSXaLn-eRXxZaWx4_-R-C3KA5IB7W3GYDUz4kkwe0Gx9cnpbvSPxBHdIQnrh9cYvCPY/s400/A4-page-size.jpg" width="398" /></a></div>
<br />
That way I could easily check what was going to be chopped off my page.<br />
<br />
Then from Lightroom I exported my book as JPG, and used the autoflow function in my photobook software (Albumworks) to automatically make full bleed pages. The excess margins were ignored.<br />
<br />
It was so nice to be able to work within Lightroom switching between the Develop module to edit images and the Book module to work on the page. The export to JPG and import into my Albumworks photobook software at the end was a bit of a pain (I wish Blurb had A4 as an option!) but I'll certainly do it this way again.<br />
<br />
Here are some more pages from my book:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzeLmcASEGapVwTNogENHNOrDybU1gJUrsliHNFAIGXjxpDWNQuZaAkBrvjQehPmNAtGfVORYH8-KK47z15xa1L6AKegGiTKelIzn9P3gcyjUvweWJmyDBpUDZwqnSz2mEVbV4q-sOXk8/s1600/new_photo_books-0196.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzeLmcASEGapVwTNogENHNOrDybU1gJUrsliHNFAIGXjxpDWNQuZaAkBrvjQehPmNAtGfVORYH8-KK47z15xa1L6AKegGiTKelIzn9P3gcyjUvweWJmyDBpUDZwqnSz2mEVbV4q-sOXk8/s640/new_photo_books-0196.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3_QrVCvjtPyfCDpJ_NQUTPHDPliqeRTf_v0j1OaOlg0_oPHil_XgVy0dbwfLIfOnCyjv8UsEYa1g1e3Uzf9Jqyj-j-_jbRehQP5iV7es_OTdq0MaxqmvASRDOa7ZchhrUODvgGQLXGpo/s1600/new_photo_books-0197.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3_QrVCvjtPyfCDpJ_NQUTPHDPliqeRTf_v0j1OaOlg0_oPHil_XgVy0dbwfLIfOnCyjv8UsEYa1g1e3Uzf9Jqyj-j-_jbRehQP5iV7es_OTdq0MaxqmvASRDOa7ZchhrUODvgGQLXGpo/s640/new_photo_books-0197.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
If you're interested in giving Lightroom's Book module a try I recommend watching some of <a href="http://blogs.adobe.com/jkost/lightroom-training-videos" target="_blank">Julieanne Kost's free tutorials</a>. She explains it very simply. <br />
<br />
At first the set of templates in Lightroom seems a bit limited, but you can play around with the padding of cells and captions to easily customise them. I was even able to turn a photo cell into a journaling box by placing a white photo in the cell and adjusting the offset of the caption so it started at the top.<br />
<br />
It was all quite straight forward, and I had a photobook done in record time! Great fun! :)Esther Andrewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17730422311728237992noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5197999983131703997.post-64483932281620857962012-12-01T18:36:00.000-08:002013-05-04T01:21:36.164-07:00Is it December ALREADY?!Last time I checked it was APRIL!! Oh dear! I went to a conference in August where a presenter said that if you don't post on your blog every couple of days it's pointless having one. I'm doomed then! Are you still there dear reader?!<br />
I've had three photobooks printed since last I posted. I'll have to give you some previews in a future post.<br />
<br />
In the meantime here is some scrapping news. Now that it's December the scrapping world is full of great Christmas deals and giveaways. I am very lucky to be on the creative teams of some of the very best designers.<br />
.<br />
.<br />
.<br />
<br />
UPDATE 4/5/2013: I'm afraid I lost all the images on this page. I think they linked to places that no longer exist! I've deleted the rest of the post because it's pointless without pics! Sorry :(<br />
<br />
Instead, here are some of my 365 Project page from December. The last month was effectively my Daily December project:<br />

My design process this year was a variation on <a href="http://snippets-by-esther.blogspot.com.au/2011/01/planning-photobook.html">last year's process</a>. This year I didn't design a theme template. Instead I decided to use a selection of <a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/index.php/cPath/74_221/sort/3a/page/9">Maplebrook Studio templates</a> with rounded photo masks like these:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/11114"><img border="0" src="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/images/LT537623-180x180.jpg" /></a>
<a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/11552"><img border="0" src="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/images/LT538733-180x180.jpg" /></a>
<a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/11345"><img border="0" src="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/images/LT538933-180x180.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I've put the photo masks onto Stapled Photos Layered Templates (I also used these last year - I love the dimension they give).
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/7547"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/images/LT931645-180x180.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
Then I selected a range of paper packs that had subtle patterns and colors that would work with my photos such as:
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/13506">
<img border="0" height="180" src="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/images/PP941683-180x180.jpg" width="180" /></a> <a href="http://www.blogger.com/%3Ca%20href=%22http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/13506%22%3E%3C/a%3E%3Cbr%20/%3E"><img border="0" src="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/images/PP314520-180x180.jpg" /></a><a href="http://www.blogger.com/%20%20http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/13623"></a>
<a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/13743"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/images/PP674243-180x180.jpg" width="180" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I have used each of these paper packs many times already, and I mention these products because... <br />
<hr />
<div style="color: #cc0000; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">templates and paper packs are ALL 30% off at Designer Digitals this week!</span></div>
<hr />
So if you were thinking of starting a larger project like this, it's an ideal time to do it!<br />
I have also used some favorite kits from Lynn Grieveson, such as <a class="bb-url" href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/13313" target="_blank">Stormy Weather Kit</a>, <a class="bb-url" href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/9443" target="_blank">Wild Weekend Kit</a>, <a class="bb-url" href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/13736" target="_blank">April Morning Kit</a>, and a variety of brushes. A few pages are below, all linked to my DD gallery where you'll find the credits if you want to know more.<br />

So once I'd settled on the basic design, a few templates and paper packs, the rest seems to fall into place fairly quickly. It needs to, because this album is 100 pages long!!<br />
... back to that grindstone... ;)Esther Andrewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17730422311728237992noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5197999983131703997.post-60734369160920002722012-02-28T03:12:00.003-08:002012-02-28T03:12:31.374-08:00Rain, rain, go away...Well, what a <span class="st"><em>La Niña</em></span> we are having!! Here is what has happened at our house:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the 20 years we have lived in our house we have not had such a problem. It seems that the company that installed our solar electricity panels drilled through the roof in inappropriate places and this is the consequence! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Meanwhile the rain continues... The forecast is not good for our nation's capital. Canberra is predicted to get half its yearly rainfall in the next few days. </div>

Let's hope it does not eventuate!</div>

I noticed that a few of my photos have made it to pinterest and I said to my husband that "I'm getting a lot of traffic from pinterest to my blog".<br />
<br />
There was no response.<br />
<br />
So I asked whether he understood what I just said.<br />
He replied "Not a word! I'm going to bed!"<br />
<br />
I had to laugh! That says it all, I think! We had a blast at Hanging Rock yesterday. It is a stunning venue, don't you agree?! <br />

I took my daughter's point-and-shoot camera as a backup to my old Lumix, and I found hers took great shots in the dark! Here's a little collage of photos of rockin' Rod:<br />

So now that I can emerge from my report writing I finally get to start feeling more festive. Last night a friend and I went into the city to photograph the tree and was inspired to scrap it using a similar style to the fabulous <a href="http://janamorton.blogspot.com/2011/12/december-daily-continues.html">Jana</a> is using for her Daily December album.<br />

Sometimes it seems a shame to make photos small on a page. Lucky we still have the originals full size on the computer! Here's the reflection I took of myself in the bauble (just so no-one can ever say I don't take photos of myself!!).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here's another reflection of me in a bauble - much bigger bauble, much smaller reflection :)

Christmas dinner out with friends tonight. The craziness has begun...!Esther Andrewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17730422311728237992noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5197999983131703997.post-68079657558659063832011-12-01T02:36:00.001-08:002011-12-01T03:06:41.064-08:00Christmas is on its way!Suddenly the store is filling with decorations and the talk in all the scrapbooking forums is of Christmas kits and gift ideas and, of course, Days of December.
So I thought I'd mention a few bargain digital scrapbooking goodies that you can pick up.
Suzanne of Roadside Designs is giving away a free "25 days of Christmas" set of templates on her <a href="http://roadsidedesigns.blogspot.com/">blog</a>.
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://feedproxy.google.com/%7Er/RoadsideDesigns/%7E3/sDP2Dpacmtw/christmas-day-1.html"><img border="0" height="600" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-u7q6wH5aij4/Ts7HLffvAPI/AAAAAAAAEYc/jhbTLX_6KWE/s1600/rd_25doc11600.jpg" width="600" /></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Like all of Suzanne's templates they are so well designed and beautifully shadowed. I am such a fan of her templates - pages come together so easily. It seems so funny when I look back at my early days of scrapping and thought that using templates was cheating! Now I use them all the time - scrapping is all about the memory keeping, after all!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are a couple of pages I threw together. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.catscrap.com/galleri/data/500/rd_25doc11Lpg-mine.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://www.catscrap.com/galleri/data/500/rd_25doc11Lpg-mine.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So this all leaves one in a quandary. Should a girl get the Christmas shopping done, tidy the house ready for guests in a few weeks' time, go hunting for all these beautiful bargains or scrap the days of December?!! It is such a busy, exciting time of the year!</div>Esther Andrewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17730422311728237992noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5197999983131703997.post-32078119839537639942011-10-31T04:42:00.000-07:002011-10-31T04:42:41.248-07:00We have turned 50My husband and I are only a month apart in age (yes we were high school sweet-hearts!!).<br />
We have celebrated our significant birthdays with a joint party. Our 30th, 40th and 50th celebrations have all been at our current house.<br />
So our 50th was last weekend. It is so special to have all your friends gathered together to celebrate. I only wish the evening could last longer. I gave my camera to one of my daughters during the speeches. She captured this shot. I think it speaks volumes...<br />

I love this man and the life we've had together. I am a very lucky person!Esther Andrewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17730422311728237992noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5197999983131703997.post-25611463653806082332011-10-22T02:43:00.000-07:002011-10-22T02:43:32.980-07:00A Photo A Day project - and the weird responses!I am continuing with my Photo-A-Day project again this year. Actually it is a "Photo-A-Day (more or less)" project. It is often referred to as a "365 Project" but there is a little conundrum next year as it is a leap year it will become be a "366 Project"!<br />
My daughters have become used to my camera appearing at awkward moments. They explain to their friends that I take a photo every day; making it sound like I have some some incurable disease!<br />
Of course there are also very amusing comments from helpful members of the public...<br />
Yesterday a family of ducks wandered into the school yard. We had to call wildlife rescue. I tried to get in close to capture their cute faces.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh56bv2-J1TdRrlhT8ZzyF9-9JtQ4_njeLesj_N4HiZTmA4LZ85WiUVJ81dEpRm_tA-4pZKJ2ZMncIPZWOFCMKEKE4G6xu_14NeLY6qH0FvOlgS2mRSlETlQWhlUJ5jctb-mQj_7gNQ7xo/s1600/P1090328.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh56bv2-J1TdRrlhT8ZzyF9-9JtQ4_njeLesj_N4HiZTmA4LZ85WiUVJ81dEpRm_tA-4pZKJ2ZMncIPZWOFCMKEKE4G6xu_14NeLY6qH0FvOlgS2mRSlETlQWhlUJ5jctb-mQj_7gNQ7xo/s640/P1090328.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
A helpful colleague kept suggesting I move away and photograph them from above. Can you imagine this shot taken from above? It would just not be the same!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwmHhhxFI6_l7YrGj5K2q2FRoM09tC_r65tBkmb6POuP7T3WAGvJ-AksPwDgTTO5HicMWiyEXMTXcNKaNzZEuJSZrI8tfz0Mv8tl5jNwYY74ZSW4lE-jhP5F5-uxTlsef2JISHAvlihDM/s1600/rainbow-at-the-Marketplace.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="278" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwmHhhxFI6_l7YrGj5K2q2FRoM09tC_r65tBkmb6POuP7T3WAGvJ-AksPwDgTTO5HicMWiyEXMTXcNKaNzZEuJSZrI8tfz0Mv8tl5jNwYY74ZSW4lE-jhP5F5-uxTlsef2JISHAvlihDM/s640/rainbow-at-the-Marketplace.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Today I was in the supermarket whilst there was a torrential downpour outside (1" in a matter of minutes). I emerged to see the most amazing double rainbow. Luckily I always carry my point and shoot camera in my bag. There was a young trolley attendant nearby. He asked whether I could get the whole rainbow with just 10 megapixels. My mind went into spasms wondering how to respond:<br />a) ask what made him think my camera was 10 megapixels<br />b) explain that my camera was old and only 5 megapixels<br />
c) explain that I was taking a panorama and would merge it in photoshop, or<br />d) mention that the field of view was nothing to do with
megapixels and all to do with the lens...<br /><br />I just said "oh yes".<br /><br />He replied helpfully that there
was a 15 megapixel camera on sale for $300 the other day.<br />That raised another
whole series of questions in my mind.<br /><br />I just said "oh really?"<br /><br />But
it got the better of me and I said<br />"I have a 19 megapixel camera at home but
it's too big to fit in my bag."<br /><br />He said no more!Esther Andrewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17730422311728237992noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5197999983131703997.post-71019916450141760942011-10-01T16:48:00.000-07:002011-10-03T16:59:28.213-07:00More digital water colors :)I've been playing with <a href="http://10steps.sg/tutorials/photoshop/transform-photo-into-watercolor-painting/">this</a> tutorial.<br />

I don't have the brush skills or patience for such beautiful work so I went off searching for some tutorials that might help me achieve something a bit similar.<br />
I found these: <a href="http://www.photoshoproadmap.com/Photoshop-blog/2009/04/06/15-artistic-watercolor-effects-photoshop-tutorials">15 artistic watercolor effects</a> and tried the

(full credits <a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/ideas/showphoto.php?photo=163862&cat=500&ppuser=3243">here</a>)</div>
I started with this photo of my daughter because of her mona-lisa smile and the plain background. It also is not very sharp so it's not much good on its own:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlxa1C9jWFLbKxpO5SCeVb8o3nrHfNQJBR75N4cSegMnfeJxZOvtkwG3vVRJbNAOfc1QbyodLbIr33FjiHkXqYSannBUZ8WGzDSurZ7V49CWeh9LOfj_O-9JWkXDarB4w59cyVEnQT9rQ/s1600/Amy%2527s-passport-photo-%25285%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlxa1C9jWFLbKxpO5SCeVb8o3nrHfNQJBR75N4cSegMnfeJxZOvtkwG3vVRJbNAOfc1QbyodLbIr33FjiHkXqYSannBUZ8WGzDSurZ7V49CWeh9LOfj_O-9JWkXDarB4w59cyVEnQT9rQ/s400/Amy%2527s-passport-photo-%25285%2529.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So I followed through the tutorial.<br />
Here is the image after adding the 'cutout filter' layer with luminosity blend mode (step 6):<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkonI4nHT6T80o4C4hFS6SAsYiiRBxOvLThRaog50CRntKo_QcjmfxPbgwno1p8f7bNYcv0c5XmH3aJ9srZM8BZcx0n-bgL4R2kr066sIbu41keDsnI3rYQs9HGDv1AOM7tyj57IpVwLc/s1600/Amy%2527s-passport-photo-%25285%2529-cutout.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkonI4nHT6T80o4C4hFS6SAsYiiRBxOvLThRaog50CRntKo_QcjmfxPbgwno1p8f7bNYcv0c5XmH3aJ9srZM8BZcx0n-bgL4R2kr066sIbu41keDsnI3rYQs9HGDv1AOM7tyj57IpVwLc/s400/Amy%2527s-passport-photo-%25285%2529-cutout.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
After adding the 'dry brush filter' layer with screen blend mode (step 8):<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjR76WD2kUM0P8XaOF9tdXr8giPCZ8bUjcxSUg6wcfBqT5bIsqwrV2UBp8OlLipwd8s0qUbN7GhmOyY3WHd8hSvihwz-g4jYzxHAK9VZPBZHgO4XfyaGmFl4rHtGnRlijd2LZY60qpxYs/s1600/Amy%2527s-passport-photo-%25285%2529-dry-brush.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjR76WD2kUM0P8XaOF9tdXr8giPCZ8bUjcxSUg6wcfBqT5bIsqwrV2UBp8OlLipwd8s0qUbN7GhmOyY3WHd8hSvihwz-g4jYzxHAK9VZPBZHgO4XfyaGmFl4rHtGnRlijd2LZY60qpxYs/s400/Amy%2527s-passport-photo-%25285%2529-dry-brush.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
After adding the 'median filter' layer with soft light mode (step 8):<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjip58Igi94dVMChGvXyWw-RSqRHMrNCqI5ZScOo4GvQs54f_jL1uAg3hZdEAtEepeBefQKMiWelsT9uMKrLHrKFACBci0u18Nx3q_XyhWNa0NOUismcqf8G9STYV9aiKgxE2X3JyNAtYM/s1600/Amy%2527s-passport-photo-%25285%2529-median.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjip58Igi94dVMChGvXyWw-RSqRHMrNCqI5ZScOo4GvQs54f_jL1uAg3hZdEAtEepeBefQKMiWelsT9uMKrLHrKFACBci0u18Nx3q_XyhWNa0NOUismcqf8G9STYV9aiKgxE2X3JyNAtYM/s400/Amy%2527s-passport-photo-%25285%2529-median.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
But I wasn't happy with it quite. I wanted some pencil/ink edges. So I added an 'accented edges filter' layer in pin light blend mode as follows:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: right;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKG0rvBaAfTu-D5BJwLdJQnEoIkL1qOBlj9KHPcgTKFaV7xuTXVRg6hIC_TtgsDq_yMcHcWeOxa6oyKMGTSlpoDXzNuYEldybR9TGprvbNxOsemuMMhDxdnvOjoGLz30WzqsNi2nOJUm4/s1600/Capture+accented+edges.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="404" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKG0rvBaAfTu-D5BJwLdJQnEoIkL1qOBlj9KHPcgTKFaV7xuTXVRg6hIC_TtgsDq_yMcHcWeOxa6oyKMGTSlpoDXzNuYEldybR9TGprvbNxOsemuMMhDxdnvOjoGLz30WzqsNi2nOJUm4/s640/Capture+accented+edges.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
to get this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnzewrk9DuDMpG05ZT5XgY5LZ1uoKQq2cgnl3Kx_c-ciQEm-xWhmxmE7LVTK7hHgSlF4TO0RcD7eyGrS9YXc7zFqHpBuPk1K_tOizOTI55WMonu_FuOiDA1aM4bX30qdYz54LHLekY85I/s1600/Amy%2527s-passport-photo-%25285%2529-final.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnzewrk9DuDMpG05ZT5XgY5LZ1uoKQq2cgnl3Kx_c-ciQEm-xWhmxmE7LVTK7hHgSlF4TO0RcD7eyGrS9YXc7zFqHpBuPk1K_tOizOTI55WMonu_FuOiDA1aM4bX30qdYz54LHLekY85I/s400/Amy%2527s-passport-photo-%25285%2529-final.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
the difference is not clear at this resolution, but the eyes and eyebrows in particular look like they have been inked in.<br />
In retrospect I could have added a sketch layer over the top a bit like this: <a href="http://www.photoshopessentials.com/photo-effects/portrait-to-sketch">portrait to sketch </a><br />
I used these Designer Digitals products to make it look like it was painted on a canvas:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/9812"><img border="0" src="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/images/PP232518-180x180.jpg" /></a>
<img src="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/ideas/data/2216/thumbs/KPertiet_WateryPhotoMasksNo3PREV.jpg" />
<a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/12674"><img border="0" src="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/images/DS526311-180x180.jpg" /></a></div>
I clipped the photo to one of Katie's Watery Photo Masks which were blended to the linen texture paper in multiply mode so the texture showed through.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://design.creativefan.com/brilliant-matte-dispersion-effects-in-photoshop%20"></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvTS-GDbNmULbq8IdavpY2U-74dUvAOeRz-m7RFHKEtSKMERSXx-SePBXMJ4Y-57dZfobmvXQOWVQwko-yIvYMev8tL_7tvP5wixKmAH8CaxPtsxwf9i3AD5Vx8jUhCm64T2A3XVzT05Y/s1600/2011-09-Portrait-of-an-ESTJ-p1-photo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvTS-GDbNmULbq8IdavpY2U-74dUvAOeRz-m7RFHKEtSKMERSXx-SePBXMJ4Y-57dZfobmvXQOWVQwko-yIvYMev8tL_7tvP5wixKmAH8CaxPtsxwf9i3AD5Vx8jUhCm64T2A3XVzT05Y/s400/2011-09-Portrait-of-an-ESTJ-p1-photo.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I added the watery splashes around and painted them with color (click
the "lock transparency pixels" icon on the top left of the layers
palette and then paint) inspired by this tutorial:
<a href="http://design.creativefan.com/brilliant-matte-dispersion-effects-in-photoshop%20">brilliant matte dispersion effects in photoshop</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

(Of course, I'd be mortified if I was that messy with paint in real life!!)<br />
And after adding the frame and background paper it was done :)<br />

A significant photo of my daughter taken in New York City 20 years ago. Much has changed since then!Esther Andrewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17730422311728237992noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5197999983131703997.post-28205959806867986122011-09-03T20:11:00.000-07:002011-09-03T20:12:21.591-07:00Good design and inspirationWhen I first started scrapping, I could a photo or two I wanted to scrap and some pretty paper to match but then I was paralysed! So I approached it like a research project and spent countless hours<br />
<ul><li> reading tutorials on balance (rule of thirds, white space, visual triangles), contrast, emphasis and repetition, leading the eye, focal points</li>
<li>analysing two page design techniques</li>
<li>collecting every <a href="http://www.pagemaps.com/">page map</a> by Becky Fleck</li>
<li>storing every page I saw online that was inspiring</li>
</ul>But after all of that I found that the most motivating and practical way to learn was to join online challenges. In early 2007 I discovered an Ad Inspiration challenge at<a href="http://www.twopeasinabucket.com/"> twopeasinabucket</a> organised by Paula Gilarde. Paula has a gift for choosing Ads that are great examples of good design. Almost every week for the following 3 years I created a page based on one of the Ads she chose... then Paula took a well deserved break...<br />
Now Paula has resumed her Ad Inspiration Challenge from her <a href="http://scraptherefore.blogspot.com/">blog</a> and last week she tempted me with this double page Ad:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVRv57q1Art8WScWn-JW7R1OzVVMViG16QmhTGyYBGNIufV9Md66Yjm-xTI7Kzb752lW7PATFskxY4mw9tUwODbvVTMBe-T9vU3A3ikvPOeVNKfbPak8VoyU7N-EWefXKXaCOx68E7l_4S/s1600/boden.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVRv57q1Art8WScWn-JW7R1OzVVMViG16QmhTGyYBGNIufV9Md66Yjm-xTI7Kzb752lW7PATFskxY4mw9tUwODbvVTMBe-T9vU3A3ikvPOeVNKfbPak8VoyU7N-EWefXKXaCOx68E7l_4S/s640/boden.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>Here is my take:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/ideas/data/502/medium/2011-08-20-Lake-Eppalock.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/ideas/data/502/medium/2011-08-20-Lake-Eppalock.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>Credits <a href="http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/ideas/showphoto.php?photo=162129">here.</a><br />
As usual, Paula's choice of Ad had just the right balance of contrast and repetition.<br />
Some of my all-time favorite pages are from Paula's inspirational choices.<br />
I hope you'll join me in one of Paula's Ad Inspiration Challenges!Esther Andrewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17730422311728237992noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5197999983131703997.post-54483545255663130292011-08-30T05:10:00.000-07:002011-09-03T22:12:43.093-07:00ten things you might not know about me<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://catsyellowdays.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/ten.jpg?w=400&h=265" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="http://catsyellowdays.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/ten.jpg?w=400&h=265" width="320" /></a></div><span id="goog_1889644851"></span><span id="goog_1889644852"></span><a href="http://britgirl.typepad.co.uk/sweet_nothings/2011/08/ten-things-you-might-not-know-about-me.html">Britgirl</a> - my amazingly creative friend in the UK - has challenged me to come up with 10 things you didn't know about me. It takes some thinking!<br />
<ol><li>I was an asthmatic child; pale and anaemic. I was hospitalised with pneumonia at 7. It took my parents 15 years to organise themselves to move from the cold, damp town I grew up in to somewhere with a better climate. I have been well ever since!</li>
<li>My great, great grandparents all arrived in Australia between 1840 and 1870 from all over the world. I am about 1/2 English, and the other half is a mix of Swiss-Italian, Cornish, Scottish, Northern Irish, Southern Irish, German and possibly Norwegian.</li>
<li>I met my husband when I joined an amateur athletic club. He competed in many places in Australia and at the World Fire Fighters games in New Zealand and in Las Vegas, USA.</li>
<li>I am a messy, indecisive procrastinator!</li>
<li>I have always looked young for my age. At 21 I could still get children's fares on public transport. I had my first child at 29 and yet people still say to me that I look too young to have a 20 year old daughter.</li>
<li>I have a degree in Geology and Mathematics. I enjoyed the statistical analysis involved in geology. </li>
<li>I wore my skivvy backwards all day yesterday before I noticed on the way home.</li>
<li>I try to leave a small footprint on the earth. We have a compost bin, a vegetable garden, we dry our clothes on a clothes line, we have solar hot water and recently installed solar panels that can generate 4Kwh (more than we use on a sunny day).</li>
<li>I was christened and confirmed in the Presbyterian Church.</li>
<li>Both of my parents were teachers. Most of their close relatives were teachers, too. Guess what I do for a living!! ;)</li>
</ol>Now I tag fellow Aussie scrappers<br />
<a href="http://pins--needles.blogspot.com/">Carol</a><br />
and<br />
<a href="http://houseofamson.blogspot.com/">Carolyn </a><br />
<br />
And just to leave you with a few pages I've scrapped lately. There are some new <a href="http://www.catscrap.com/shoppe/product.php?productid=19149">Roadside Designs templates</a> that are so beautifully clean and simple. You could use them for anything, but I stuck with the original inspiration and scrapped some wedding photos. See, there's a photo of my sisters and me - I'm the eldest. I was 22 when I was married, and I'm more than 3 years older than my next sister.<br />

First our middle daughter's 18th at the end of this month. Then a couple of 50ths for my husband and me. January sees our youngest turn 16 and in June our eldest turns 21! Now we're not usually party people, but I think the next year might see us having to stretch out of our comfort zone a little!<br />
So our eldest turned 20 last month. She is not often home and she didn't want a party, but I felt I had to do something. I rustled up a few friends and they rustled up a few more and they all came for a lovely lunch. I sat inside and watched as they chatted. I thought how lovely her friends were and how she was growing up and felt happy and sad and nostalgic all at once!<br />
I scrapped this page about it - with the lyrics from "Cat's in the cradle" which captured my emotions at the time.<br />

I used a free template by Roadside Designs from her blog.<br />
I also scrapped some joyful pages of the friends. I love how you can scrap the same photo and same event from different perspectives!<br />

It also appears to be the birthday of a particular country today. Not that I'm very excited about another country's birthday but it is hard to resist a good birthday sale! So here's one from Roadside Designs:<br />

So if you are having a significant birthday soon - happy birthday to you, too! In the meantime, enjoy some birthday shopping!Esther Andrewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17730422311728237992noreply@blogger.com5
